RE: Towing 5th Wheel

Also need to know the actual weight of your truck ... to know how much payload it can take on before the GVWR is exceeded. In our case, we have a canoe or kayak or 2 loaded on our truck, plus firewood and maybe a trials bike ... so the available payload is reduced by all that, plus the humans and dogs riding in the cab. With our 25' fifth wheel, and the stuff in the truck, our F-250 PSD 4x4 crewcab's GVWR is exceeded by a few hundred pounds.

RE: Loose dog attacked me and my dog

Often when I'm walking my 100 lb. Mastiff cross on his leash, he's attacked by cute little mutts. Little yappy things come right up barking and jumping up towards his face and sometimes nipping at his feet. Jake quite likes little dogs though, so there's never been any injury as a result. He stands and tolerates the aggressive behaviour with great patience, waiting for the little dog's owner to get it under control. Often I get a look from him, his eyes imploring me to keep on walking and get him away from the little ankle-biter. On occasion, we've had little dogs follow us home because they're not under the control of their owners, or contained within a fenced yard.

RE: 13% Hitch Weight

Our fifth wheel has a GVWR of 7,000 lbs and the paperwork says dry weight of 5,850 lbs and dry pin weight of 1,120 lbs. When we brought it home empty it had a real weight of 6,272 lbs and pin weight of 1,400 lbs (stopped at the scale on the way home). Heading out loaded for a 4-week trip with full water tank (40 gallons) and everything else packed in, the actual weight of the fifth wheel was 7,800 lbs and pin weight was 1,700 lbs.

RE: Do I have enough Truck?

We have the F250 7.3L PSD crewcab shortbox. Our fifth wheel is a 25 footer with a GVWR of 7,000 lbs and a pin weight of about 1,700 lbs when loaded for a trip. On that trip, the fiver actually weight 7,800 fully loaded with water and gear. If we ever go larger on the fifth wheel, we'll also be upgrading the truck. We've done enough miles with this combination to know that something heavier or longer would make the trip too edgy for our comfort level.

RE: Alaska or Maine is the ???

Hmmmm ... better visit Maine first ... because after you've been to Alaska there is nothing to compare. Plain and simple. So do Maine and love all it has to offer. Then plan the adventure to Alaska, and never look back!

RE: Rip Off Artists on Highway 3 in the Crowsnest.

I noticed on our last trip to the Yukon that many service stations would show only fuel purchase even when we bought some refreshments at the same time. I also didn't notice it until reviewing receipts. The total cost was correct (pump price plus cost of refreshments) but the quantity of fuel was skewed to reflect the total cost. Wondered how this affected their bookkeeping ... wouldn't their records show more fuel sold than was actually sold, and thus more taxes due to the governments for the fuel sold? And what about the inventory ... fuel sold vs. fuel bought. I pondered a bit, but as long as we were charged the correct total cost I figured it wasn't too much of my brain power.

RE: Dogs and Time Change (or lack thereof...)

I'm glad I'm not the only one with a dog that barks at the pantry when it's supper time.

RE: Bug Repellent

Well, Joe, folklore in the Yukon while I was growing up was that those who drank copious amounts of alcohol attracted more bugs. Therefore, going dry will solve the problem. I think that is the real reason many northern communites have gone "dry" ... to reduce the bug problem. :B Is that a beer in your hand at the Bus??? Tsk ...

RE: Would like to read about your trip to Alaska

http://suethomas.ca Still adding our September 2009 trip, but our other trips taken during various times of the year (including December) are there.

RE: Badly worn tire

One of our tires went bald on one of its edges, all around the tire though. Problem was a bent axle. Replaced the axles with better ones and no further problem.

RE: Struggling with decision

I'm glad you're working through it. We've travelled with one of our dogs while he had cancer (bone tumour) and our cat while her kidneys were failing. Stayed close to home with cancer dog but fiesty cat spent 4 weeks on the road at age 19 and then 5 days with us in a rental cabin a month before she died just before her 20th birthday. We didn't dwell on the pending deaths. We focused on life. The holistic vet who treated our cancer dog suggested we keep our energy positive. She said dogs feel our energy and if we were concerned or fretting, then our cancer dog would feel that and it would affect his health. She acknowledged that we would feel sad and some days would be frustrating, but encouraged us to take it all the same way our dog was ... one day at a time and live in the moment. She said animals don't perceive their pain the same as humans. They don't feel sorry for themselves, they just deal with it. She said he'd slow down and he'd adjust to his circumstance, and he'd still be content with his life. She also told us that our dog would let us know it was time ... that his energy would have a significant change. Good thing we took her advice ... his "two weeks to live" diagnosis by our regular vet was a bit shortsighted ... with the holistic vet's care he lived 8 months. And lived well! As long as our pets have been up to it, they're with us. We've had to accommodate their needs, including ensuring the cat had something to eat and peed every hour while on the road. No regrets. Her last trips with us were precious!

RE: Backing up an incline

Our driveway is 18% grade, curved and about 200' long. No room to turn the fifth wheel at the top so it is backed up each time we come home. Fifth wheel is 25' long, truck is F-250 PSD 4x4 shortbox. Each time we lock the hubs, and put it in low range. After one of the tranny oil changes, the tech advised that the truck should have 10-15 minutes of idling at the top to let the fluids continue to circulate and cool the tranny well. More an issue for us is where the driveway levels off ... the bottom of the fifth wheel just brushes the top of the tailgate when the trailer is level but the truck is still on the incline. We have good clearance when everything is level ... it's just the drastic transition between the two vehicles. Slow and easy does it!

RE: Provincial Parks in BC and AL

Most of B.C.'s provincial parks have sites that will accommodate your rig. Our truck with fifth wheel total 43'. We don't hesitate to pull into the provincial campgrounds and prefer them over commercial campgrounds. I've posted pictures of some of our campground sites on the Canadian Campground Pics sticky that is at the top of this forum's main page. And many more pics of northern BC parks and roads on my website at http://suethomas.ca. Off the top of my head, parks that may not be well-suited are Buckinghorse River and Kiskatinaw on the Alaska Highway, and Seeley Lake on Hwy 16. You'd find a site, but it might be tight.

RE: reduced fat in dog food

gosh, don't tell my 100 pound fellow that your small gal gets a cup a food a day and only needs to walk a couple of miles for it! Poor ol'Jake gets 1 cup of dry food at breakfast and 1 cup at supper, plus a bit of cooked ground bison meat (he's allergic to many foods and bison is one he can tolerate). He needs to walk 5 miles a day to keep his body lean. It is a challenge in winter because we don't have as much daylight before and after work to exercise, so his dry food is reduced to 3/4 cup at each meal.

RE: Advance Warning

well, one little ol'injun ain't no big deal. Keep the rain dancing to a minimum. Your little missus can invite some colonials over for tea and you can keep'em toasty by your fire.

RE: Cell phone coverage in Canada/Alaska

In BC, Telus has the best service and coverage. Compared to costs for cell service in the US, it isn't cheap. Beware of roaming charges ... very expensive! Telus coverage maps are at http://www.telusmobility.com/en/BC/Coverageandtravelling/canadavoicemaps.shtml. Note that you'll need a phone that is capable of old technology (digital PCS or 1x) for some of the areas. If your phone is only 3G capable it will not work in some of the more remote areas. Along the Alaska Highway, most communities now have cell service. Between the communities, no service. When I say "community" I mean places like Watson Lake, Teslin, Haines Junction, Destruction Bay and Beaver Creek, and of course Whitehorse. Roadside stops/places like Liard Hot Springs, Junction 37 or Jakes Corner do not have cell service. Along the Cassiar Highway in northern BC there is no cell service. If you plan to stay at commercial campgrounds, there are pay phones or use Skype from your computer if the campground offers internet. If you will be travelling the backroads and require continuous service with the outside world, satellite phone is the way to go. You can rent satellite phones now for whatever period is required.

RE: FrontlinePlus...HELP

How's the carpet and furniture in your house ... is there potential for flea infestation there? Our flea problems ended when we moved into this house with no carpet and bought leather furniture. Cat and dogs continued to frequent the outdoors, cat loved to sleep in the woods on the moss, but that wasn't the source of the fleas we had previously ... the house was. I admit I was a bit lazy about vacuuming diligently ...

RE: Have you driven the Dempster?

When we were in Inuvik, our RV neighbours had a large Class A that had the back window broken out by a rock tossed by another vehicle. They were waiting for a replacement window, figuring a week for the shipping and install. The $$ for that service were very silly. We suggested they just put a sheet of plywood in until they reached better facilities, but they really wanted their back window replaced BEFORE driving back down the Dempster. I couldn't understand the logic.

RE: Have you driven the Dempster?

Pictures from our two trips on the Dempster are at http://suethomas.ca/DempsterHwy.html. You'll get varying opinions, from it being the worst road to it being a great road. It is a road unlike others most have driven. Many miles between settlements and if it is wet when you go through, it can be miserable. We thought it a grand adventure and plan to do it again some day. As always, we prepare well for trips on gravel roads.

RE: Replacing Lippert axles with Dexter ?

You're in Alberta so why not call Standens in Calgary? http://www.standens.com/trailer.htm The fellow who helped us out was Lawrence Trieber Manager, Standen's Ltd Axle Division Calgary, Alberta PH 403-258-7877 Lawrence.Trieber@standens.com When we replaced our axles earlier this year, we were super-impressed with the customer service. Lawrence was extremely patient as we asked all the dumb questions and he promptly replied to emails. They also shipped to us at a very reasonable cost.
